The public’s fury over this information about what they were actually eating and giving their children led to the 1906 passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act, and the government set up new standards for public health and safety. Inspectors began visiting butchers and other such places to catch the people adding dangerous things to food and medicine.
